Senator Irwin Update – 12/6/20

Senator Irwin Update

We are excited to announce that last week (Thursday, Dec. 3rd) Senator Jeff Irwin released a package of four bills; SB1240, SB1241, SB1242 and SB1243. These four bills relate to Criminal Justice Reform including restoring Good Time Credits and would help bring incarcerated citizens one step closer to coming home sooner. Particularly, SB1242 would restore the Good Time Credit earning system which was in place prior to 1978 when Proposal B eliminated this incentive. Today, Michigan is one of only six states across the nation which provides no positive reinforcement for those state prisoners who are working to correct their errant behaviors. As a person recognizes the mistakes of their past and makes better choices going forward, a Good Time Credit law serves to encourage this journey.

At Michigan Justice Advocacy we recognize that the length of a prison sentence does not determine successful outcomes, only what one does with their time behind bars will make the difference toward a more successful return to society. We applaud Senator Irwin for taking this step and seeking to better our criminal justice system. If you agree with the content of these bills and would like to support Senator Irwin’s actions, please contact your Michigan State Senator and let them know how you feel by sending them a letter today or calling them directly.
